Coloring is for Grown-ups too.

Coloring. Whether you’ve done it recently or haven’t since the third grade, the verdict is out. Coloring is good for you. When I first got to college I knew some girls who had hand colored pictures hanging all over their dorm room, mostly of Disney characters. At first, I thought that was a little weird, because I hadn’t colored in ages. But then I realized that coloring is so relaxing. That’s when I broke out the mini princess coloring pages that Hannah gave me for graduation and started coloring like crazy. Whenever I began to feel sad or overwhelmed, I’d sit down with my mini pages and my markers and color Ariel, Cinderella, or Tiana. By the time I completed my masterpiece, I’d feel a little less tense. I began giving my boyfriend my colored creations, and then one day he took me to Walmart and bought me Little Mermaid coloring pages and the 96 pack of crayons. Who was the cool kid now? If you’re thinking me, you’re correct. Anyway, it is not two years later, and I still coloring on a lazy Saturday while drinking hot tea and watching Netflix. My latest binge is Switched at Birth because as it turns out, I’m a real ABC Family junkie. Don’t even get me started on Pretty Little Liars…

While I still enjoy my Disney princesses and Alice in Wonderland coloring books, I recently decided to buy a coloring book specifically made for grown-ups. It sounds a little funny to say “Adult Coloring Book” because, well. quite frankly when you put “Adult” in front of certain words, it just makes them sound somewhat pornographic. (Example: Adult Magazine, Adult Store, etc.)

I am absolutely loving my new coloring book. I purchased “The Calm Coloring Book” from 2nd and Charles, possibly the greatest store to grace this plane

t since Barnes and Noble, and I am obsessed. It has a wide array of images, from full page, to minimalist, to images that look like paintings minus the color. To aid me in coloring, I also purchased a 36 pack of Crayola colored pencils. Now, maybe I’m biased because I grew up with the Crayola Factory only 30 minutes away, but Crayola definitely has the BEST coloring supplies. So far I have managed to color two images, and unlike the coloring books for children, I find myself completely absorbed in these images. I’m studying the way the colors work together, and how they create balance and harmony. I feel myself becoming more creative, and releasing built up stress and tension with every shift in color.

So I guess what I really want to say in this post is that coloring is not just for children. I know a lot of adults who would scoff at the idea of a grown woman sitting down with a coloring book, but it is a healthy way to unwind and forget troubles your for a little while. Or maybe I just don’t want to grow up, but who does
