DIY Wednesday: Flower Lights

If you, like me, are always trying to find different ways to add a personalized spark to your boring old dorm room at college, then I have just the idea for you!

I found this idea a while ago on Pinterest, it just took me a while to finally do them. But this was my project for my first evening back here at school back in August. Not only is this project completely cute and awesome, but it is relatively cheap as well!

What you will need:

A string of white lights

A pack of white (or in my case, tin foil) cupcake liners

A pack of smaller cupcake liners, preferably in different colors

Pencil

Scissors

We will be using the larger cupcake liners to be the background pattern. I suggest using a pencil to draw your initial edge design for the first few, at least until you get the hang of it, and then proceed to cut the edge. I stuck to about 2-3 different edges, ranging from rounded edges to pointed petals. To make the cut uniform on the entire liner, I would fold the liner in half, and fold it again until it looked to be about a quarter of the liner. I would then cut the design on top so it was all uniform and less to cut around.

This flower’s background liner was cut into pointed petals. I choose a different cut for the inner liner to enhance the look.

Then, I would take a smaller liner and cut it into a different edge from the larger liner to add some variety to each “flower”. Like I mentioned before, you can do a variety of liner edges, my personal favorite was the pointed petals =)

Make sure to alter the colors of the inner liners when attaching the “flowers” to the actual string of lights

With the cupcake liner package I bought, I alternated between pink, orange, and purple flowers

To attach the liners to the string of lights, I just made a little X cut in the middle of each liner, and would stick the larger liner on the light first, soon followed by the mini liner. Make sure to push them down far enough on the light, so the liners are not touching the actual bulb portion of the lights. I alternated each of the different colors for each new light.

I was soooo proud with how this turned out! I used command hooks to hang them around the large window in my common room in my dorm. For that cozy night feeling, I turn off all my lights and plug these in, sit down in some sweats and hot tea, throw a good movie in, and relax. Granted, I don’t get these nights too often, however, when I do, they are without a doubt the best! They create a nice relaxing atmosphere, and they add a great touch of creativity to your room. I will plug these lights in with my door open, and I got so many compliments from my residents and other RAs.

If you are interested in adding an awesome creative touch to your room, this is a great idea. It was really easy and simple to do, and to top it off, it was not entirely time consuming! Think about giving these a shot. Have a great night!
