DIY Wednesday: Cotton Ball Falling Snow

By using a needle, thread, and cotton balls, I attempted to recreate the look of falling snow in my hallway.

So I literally just finished completing this project, and I must say, it has been one of my longest projects, and I slowly but surely grew to dislike it the longer it took. Granted, it took me about 2-3 hours tops to make these hanging strands, but after drawing blood from my finger (damn needle) and feeling my back start to ache from leaning over, it felt like a lot longer.

I decided to try this project this evening because it’s the night before Thanksgiving Break begins, and I’m one of the three people left in the building (I am also on duty, so I have no other choice but to sit up until midnight with my door open to my freezing wing). So anyways, I saw this project on Pinterest, and figured why not give it a shot? The photo I saw on Pinterest looked to be used in the front display of a retail store, so they had a nice glittery background to accompany the cotton ball strands, something of which I had no access to. So we are going simple this evening.

All you need to do is thread a needle, and throw on some cotton balls! It’s that easy! I alternated sizes by pulling a part the cotton balls so they were not all the same size, it added a little something. My biggest issue was trying to get the strands long enough to knot because the window I chose to decorate this with is rather large. I soon discovered that it was best to make the strands different lengths, again, it added a little something different and made it look better. I simply hung them up using tape and done!

At first, I was not sure how I felt about how these looked. After hanging up six strands, I really started to reconsider not doing it because I was not sure if I liked how it looked. But after getting complimented by another RA, I decided to go for it and finish the project. This was not one of my favorite projects, and I am actually quite glad that I am done with it, but I think it still looks cute all the same.

A terrible photo, but a view from the outside in the freezing rain/sleet. My wing is the third floor

Until next time, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
