What I'm Grateful For: Melissa

Sometimes when you are having a bad day, week, month, etc. it becomes a challenge to think that anything good will ever come your way. I have this tendency to always focus on the big stuff – whether it be bad; I totaled my car when it was almost paid off/ had a crappy race/ came home to a broken furnace on the coldest day of the year, or good; I managed to get newer car for the same loan payment I originally had/ I ran a PR/ turned out my furnace was an easy fix. So many times I lose sight of the “little things” and pass them off as negligible when in all actuality those little things add up to big things.
As November is approaching and the Thanksgiving Holiday is upon us I have decided to make this a month of remembering the “little things” that put a smile on my face. I thought a good way to do this would be to spend a few moments each night before my head hits my pillow and jot down at least three things that happened during the course of my day that I was grateful for. I am well aware this may not be easy every day, but even the littlest things count toward making the switch from seeing the glass as “half empty” to being “half full.”
The past few days I started to make some mental notes of things that made me smile and here are a few items that I put on that list:
My friendly Starbucks baristas who always have my coffee ready and greet me with a genuine smile and wish me a good day, no matter how busy they are.
My students who great me with a “good morning, Miss Davis” or tell me to “have a great day” as they leave my room.
My instructors at my gym and yoga studios who encourage me and always manage to find something I did well each class, even when I feel as though I am having an “off” day
The messages I get from my former students letting me know they are kicking their college Bio course’s a$$
PJ’s Veggie Burger and Sweet Potato fries (yes this counts… it makes me and my tummy VERY happy and grateful!)
My visits with my Grandparents and Parents on Sundays – not everyone is fortunate enough to have that.

So as we begin to dream of turkey, candied sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, pies, and all the goodies that come with the month of November I challenge you to pause, take a moment each day, and reflect on a few of the “little things” you may tend to overlook as being grateful for.
