Foodie Friday: Easy Apple Topping

So it seems to be a running thing that there is never maple syrup in my room. Every time I prepare breakfast, I have to improvise, coming up with some creative topping for whatever it is I’m having that morning. This time around, my roommates and I were making waffles before going on a hike together. Since I had apples in the fridge (and it’s almost Fall), I thought, “why not make apple topping?” The only thing is, every recipe I found on Pinterst called for brown sugar, which we don’t have. So I decided to go sans recipe and make up my own!
Ingredients:
3 medium apples of your choice
1 tablespoon cinnamon
½ tablespoon sugar
½ tablespoon vanilla extract
Directions:
Slice apples, removing the skin and chop into squares
Add apples, cinnamon, vanilla, and sugar to a frying pan over medium heat. Add a tiny bit of water.
Cover apples, stirring occasionally until tender and caramelized
Use to top waffles, pancakes, or whatever yummy breakfast treats you’re having!
Review:
So I was a bit worried at first about not having the “right” ingredients to make these apples, but they turned out really yummy! They were also much healthier than the ones found on Pinterest because they’re low in sugar, and most of the flavor comes from the apples and cinnamon, with just a hint of added sweetness. Not to mention, it’s the perfect time of year to serve apples. My apples were from the local farmer’s market, so I also got to support a local orchard while enjoying a tasty yet healthy breakfast. If you try this out in place of syrup, let me know what you think!
