Christmas Could You Not?

The scent of cinnamon, twinkling lights, an array of ornaments bespeckling a display of evergreen trees. Around the corner, you can spy a decorative Santa Claus and some snowmen, ready to add some flair to your winter wonderland. Oh wait. IT’S SEPTEMBER.
Last year, I went to the mall the on the week of September 14, entered one of the three department stores that make up the local mall, and was greeted by a display of fully decked Christmas trees. What? My birthday hadn’t even passed yet. School was a mere two and a half weeks in. Halloween was still a distant thought, let alone Thanksgiving. Yet there I was, standing among Christmas trees.
So why am I sharing this anecdote with you? Because I’m pissed. Pissed that every year, Christmas is pushed back earlier and earlier, and not because people are in the giving mood or winter is in the air. No, it’s pushed back because companies are greedy for a larger profit margin than the one they experienced the year before, and maybe, if they get Christmas in your head early, you’ll start buying, and just keep buying all the way through the month of December, disregarding how much you spend back in September. And that’s just sad. What about enjoying the seasons as they go? What about Halloween and carving pumpkins and sipping cider pressed at the local cider mill? What about Thanksgiving, and spending time with your family, and eating a slice of pumpkin pie while your uncle sits in the other room, intently watching the football game, dozing off due to all the turkey he ate? What about remembering that Christmas is a holiday about giving and celebrating the birth of Jesus? It isn’t about spending hundreds of dollars on senseless items. Sure, every now and then you buy someone something that is really beneficial to them, but more often than not it’s about wondering if it’s acceptable to buy someone a mug and box of cocoa two years in a row. So how about we stop buying Christmas related products in September and sit back and enjoy Autumn?
I just really hope that some day, and some day soon, I won’t be seeing Christmas trees out before October hits and that my birthday will be able to pass Christmas free.
