We have all seen them on Pinterest, cute wine glasses along with a little tutorial on how to paint them in order to make it your own custom work of art. Many of us repin projects like this, but never risk the potential failure that is a Pinterest project.

My friends and I decided to spend a night painting wine glasses for a work event. We made pizza, ate watermelon, gossiped, and listened to music while we each decided on our color schemes and a design. Me, being the princess that I am, decided on a pink, gold, and white scheme. I was even going to go as far as to monogram it, but I have minimal artistic ability and the fact that the paint found the glass is impressive.

So let me tell you something. Painting wine glasses (and I would assume any type of glass) is HARD. It takes multiple coats of acrylic paint before it is no longer see-through (for the most part), and minimizing noticeable lines is nearly impossible. Especially the gold. I highly recommend against using metallic paints because they go on even harder than regular flat paints.

It also takes forever for the paint to dry between coats. And it’s easy to get impatient and screw the entire thing up, royally. It’s also tempting to grab the hair dryer and speed up the drying process. I don’t really know if it works or not, because like I said it was just a temptation. I never followed through. Although the painting was a long and drawn out process, I am happy with my results. If I were to do anything differently, I would simply research the correct type of paint to use on glass. I’d also have chosen a lighter pink for the stem of my glass.

There are some other important things to know when you venture out to paint your own wine glass. The most important is that just because the glass is dry, does not mean you can use it the next day. The paint will come off just as quickly as it went on, leaving you to either say, “screw it” or start over again. The glass has to air dry for at least three weeks or you can attempt to bake it in the over for one hour. Me, being paranoid the glass would shatter, is going for the former option. Until then, it’ll just serve as decoration on my shelf. For those of you who know me well, you’re probably chuckling because you know even after those three weeks it will still just serve as decoration on my shelf. Hannah actually gave me the idea of storing jewelry in it, which I may just do.

So if you’re looking for a Pinterest project and like challenges, gather some friends and pick up some 96 cent wine glasses from walmart and get painting!
