Although it was slow to start, I'm glad I did not give up on The Selection by Kiera Cass. The story, which felt like a mix between The Hunger Games and an elaborate fairy tale, was somewhat predictable in substance but entertaining none the less. Once I got past the first four chapters, I found myself flying through the novel, unable to put it down and wondering what would happen next. Although I was more often than not able to guess the next plot detail, there were a few parts that really shocked me, making me even more eager to get to the end. Once I got there, I felt both satisfied, as well as curious as to what happens next. Unfortunately I do not own the rest of the series, but it is now on my “to buy” list. Thank goodness for Barnes and Noble memberships. So here is why you too should read The Selection. One, it is the perfect summer read. It goes quick, is entertaining, and doesn't tug at too many emotions, unlike other books I have read that have moved me to tears. You don't have to worry about sobbing on the beach or while floating in your pool. Two, with the perfect mix of dystopia and romance, it is bound to be the next big movie series, especially now that The Hunger Games is coming to a close. It's also a New York Times best seller, which only increases the chance of a movie contract being signed. Another thing that drew me into this novel, and it may be the girly girl in me, was the detailing of palace life, the color and design of the dresses worn, and overall how the thirty-five participants chosen for the Selection adjusted to life as pseudo-royalty. While The Selection is not the most thought-provoking read, it is the perfect light reading for summer vacation. There is just enough romance, drama, suspense, and surprise to keep the reader turning the pages, eager for more. I for one know I will be purchasing the next few books in the series with my next paycheck. Despite its slow, and somewhat boring beginning, I'm glad I pushed through the exposition to the main story line of this novel. If you've read The Selection, or are going to, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the book as well. The next book on my list has yet to be decided, so I guess you'll just have to wait and see! Happy reading!
