Love Always Wins

Last Friday the Supreme Court of the United States of America voted 5-4 that it is now legal for all Americans, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, to marry the person they love, regardless sex, anywhere within the United States. In this monumental decision the Justices found that, under the 14th Amendment, states must issue marriage licenses to same-sex unions that have been performed in other states. Those marriages are now valid in all 50 states. It's about FUCKING TIME!! I'm very proud to say that I am am American at this time. I say #LoveIsLove. If two people are willing to commit to each other and be bound by the covenant of marriage, should it matter whether it's between a hetero couple or a same-sex couple? Love and commitment are what matters most. The divorce rate of 'normal' couples sure isn't anything to brag about. Maybe we need to take a closer look at these couples. I've read articles about same-sex couples that were together 40, 50, 60 years. That's longer than many marriages these days. If one of my children were to come to me and tell me that they were happily committed to someone of the same sex and wanted to be married, I would be so happy for them. Happy that they found someone that loves them for who they are and is willing to love them for the rest of time. Love is such a hard thing to find and keep and should never be taken for granted and that is what marriage is about. Loving someone warts and all, through thick and thin, for better or worse. It's something we all wish for and why shouldn't we all be allowed to be married. I grew up in a household where we were told that the AIDS Epidemic was God's way of exterminating the homosexuals and that they "brought it on themselves." I never knew what GLAAD was or LBGT existed until I went off to college and they were organizations on campus. Until I was able to escape my "bubble", that was home. That was where I made my first gay friend. They're no different than anyone else. There has been much negativity said about opinions on this subject since this decision came down. But to those who baulk and want to have this repealed. TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR...The Bible doesn't allow for pre-marital sex, having children out of wedlock, abortion, or sleeping with thy neighbor, to lie, cheat or steal. But the Bible throwing types will yell like banshees criticizing others before they see themselves in the mirror. BUT He teaches compassion and forgiveness for our trespasses and to forgive those that trespass against us, because nobody is perfect! So before you cast a stone, take a good look at yourself. So to me love is love and happiness is all that matters in the end. I'm happy that same sex marriage is now legal and all marriages are acknowledged. That couples that have been living as husband and husband or wife and wife can now be listed on death certificates as spouses and more than meatly "a dear friend" or "partner" in an obituary. Thank you to the five open-minded Justices that helped make this a right. #LoveIsLove. **Since this blog post was originally written, the State of Alabama issued a 25 day ban on issuing marriage licenses to gay couples although the Supreme Court last week ruled gay marriage bans unconstitutional. The state's Supreme Court picked this amount of time because, technically, there is a 25-day period to file a petition to rehear the U.S. Supreme Court case.**
